ENGLISH AS A SECOND
LANGUAGE (ESL) SERVICES

The Adult Learners' Training and Assistance Program (ALTA) of Luzerne County Community College (LCCC) offers free English as a Second Language (ESL) instructional sessions to residents of Luzerne County who arc in need of this service. The ALTA Program is a community-based literacy program funded by the Pennsylvania Department of Education Bureau of Adult Basic and Literacy Education and The Workforce Investment Act of 1998, Title II Adult Education and Family Literacy Act United States Department of Education. The instructional sessions are scheduled during daytime and evening hours at centrally located sites to accommodate the family, employment, and transportation needs of the learners. Prior to being assigned to an instructional session, the learners are assessed to determine placement in the appropriate level of instruction. The ALTA Program, which offers beginning, intermediate, and advanced level ESL classes, has been providing literacy services in Luzerne County since 1987.
