GOV. SCHWEIKER ANNOUNCES 750 NEW JOBS IN HANOVER CROSSINGS
AdvancePCS to locate in Hanover Township, PA
HANOVER TOWNSHIP, Luzerne County (April 24) -- Proclaiming it "a great day for Northeast Pennsylvania," Gov. Mark Schweiker joined the Greater Wilkes-Barre Chamber and State and Local Officials today to announce 750 new jobs for Luzerne and Lackawanna counties.
Gov. Schweiker said that AdvancePCS will create 750 jobs at its new mail-service pharmacy in the Hanover Crossings Business Park, Hanover Township, Luzerne County --Employing skilled pharmacists and pharm techs in addition to a full management staff team. "This is an exciting time for Northeast Pennsylvania --indeed, all of Pennsylvania," Gov. Schweiker said. "We are creating jobs and building communities in every area of the state. And make no mistake about it -- the jobs we are announcing today are about more than just generating paychecks. These jobs are strengthening communities, and strong communities become even more attractive places to live, work and raise a family."
AdvancePCS will open a mail-service pharmacy in the Hanover Crossings Business Park, creating at least 750 jobs over the next three years. AdvancePCS is ranked by Fortune magazine as one of America's 100 fastest-growing public companies and is included on the Forbes Platinum list of best big companies.
"I am pleased to welcome AdvancePCS to Pennsylvania," Gov. Schweiker said. "Our business-friendly environment, talented workforce and tax-free Keystone Opportunity Zone program made AdvancePCS' decision easy. This Administration is committed to providing good-paying jobs so more students and employees will stay and invent the future in Pennsylvania. AdvancePCS' choice to bring these 750 highly skilled, quality jobs to Northeast Pennsylvania is a big step in that direction."
"We are pleased to be announcing our expansion into the Greater Wilkes-Barre area, which offers AdvancePCS many attractive advantages," said Jon S. Halbert, AdvancePCS vice chairman. "This new facility is an important part of our continuing commitment to providing value to our clients and their plan members, who find prescriptions by mail to be convenient and economical. This community's economic renewal and prospects for growth were central to our decision to locate here as well."
Halbert noted that the community's proximity to colleges of pharmacy represents a major recruiting advantage that complements the area's significant labor pool. The area also is important for its location near many of AdvancePCS' clients in the eastern United States.
Wilkes University and Luzerne County Community College each have pharmacy-related programs.
The 176,000-square-foot pharmacy is scheduled to begin operations in October. It will process 500,000 prescriptions per week. Hiring and training for pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, customer-service representatives, management and other professional roles -- such as human resources, training and technology positions -- will begin by mid-summer.
"Our employees will receive very competitive compensation and top-notch benefits because we are committed to being the employer of choice in the markets where we operate," Steven C. Mizell, Advance PCS senior vice president and chief human resources officer, said.
"In addition, we strongly believe that our philosophy of community involvement and employee recognition contributes to employee pride and loyalty. Our practice of promoting from within frequently creates new career opportunities, and we support that approach with extensive education and training programs."
Stephen M. Barrouk, president and CEO of the Greater Wlkes-Barre Chamber of Business and Industry, added, "What we are celebrating here today is an example of what the Chamber has been working to do -- locate quality, highly skilled jobs in northeastern Pennsylvania. These jobs provide real employment options for area students and residents and for those skilled professionals who moved away and now want to come home. We are proud to have worked on this location through a process that brought business, education and the public sector together as a team for the good of the region."
Barrouk also thanked the partners who helped make the project possible, including state officials; the area's legislative delegation; Luzerne County and Hanover Township municipal and School Board officials; Mericle Commercial Real Estate Services; Earth Conservancy; U.S. Postal Service; Luzerne County Careerlink; Wilkes University; and Luzerne County Community College.
